TESTIMONIALS

Credit For the Review: Michele DeLuca | niagara-gazette.com It started with one. Now there are two. And Shawn Weber, one of the owners of Wine on Third, a wine bar and upscale restaurant on Third Street, he wishes there were a lot more. “We got the idea that tourists weren’t making their way up Third Street,” Weber said. “So we decided to go and get them.” Adds Tim Mezhir, manager of Wine on Third, “I think the owners of the B&B appreciate it more than the hotels.” Because the bed & breakfast establishment’s treat their guests as if they are friends or family, the golf carts gives them one more service to offer their guests, he explained. The wine bar’s seven-seat golf cart was purchased late last summer. It took some time to satisfy New York state’s stringent requirements for carts on streets; the vehicle required many more lights and reflectors, Mezhir said. It didn’t really get much of a workout last year, but this summer, the cart has been carrying tourists right to the door of the restaurant — and any place else they want to go. The restaurant reached out to area hotels and B&Bs, letting them know the cart was available to pick up guests. “The reaction has been incredible,” Mezhir said, guessing that the cart has increased business around 10 percent in an already busier than ever before summer. “We have people calling us seven days a week.” “Not only is it great for business,” Mezhir added, “it’s great for tourists. They are in an area they are unfamiliar with and when we pick them up, they can come here and dine and afterward, we’ll take them where ever they want to go.” One of the main drivers of the cart, Joe Hill of Lewiston, 22, a Buffalo State College marketing student, said he most enjoyed picking up a group of recently married and engaged couples from the Wingate Hotel. “I put on some music so they would have a better time. They were singing in the cart and dancing — in a safe way, of course,” he joked. “They ended up coming back to the restaurant the next two nights.” Hill and several other Wine on Third employees drive the cart around downtown, sometimes just looking for tired tourists and offering them a ride. Most often, they respond as well to calls from hotels and B&B’s who have guests who want a ride to the restaurants. Even those who have driven cars to Niagara Falls seem to appreciate that they can relax and have a few drinks when they are using the golf cart service. “After a couple of glasses of wine or cocktails they don’t have to worry about driving,” Mezhir said. The idea proved so popular that another downtown restaurant, the Rainforest Cafe, purchased a cart this summer. “They don’t have to be coming to our restaurant,” said the general manager of the cafe. The cart, also available to guests at the hotel, is available to just about anyone, the manager said. “When guests eating here ask for rides to other hotels or attractions, we’ve been more than happy to drop them off. Really, anyone who needs a ride is welcome.” “It’s definitely a good complimentary service for our senior citizens,” he added, noting that since it was purchased, the cart has carried about 1,000 riders. The idea of golf carts appeals to Gaelan Baillie, owner of Niagara Bike Rental on Old Falls and Prospect, who lets the Wine on Third golf cart plug in when its battery gets low. “I like the carts quite a bit,” said Baillie. “I think they’re a great idea for downtown Niagara Falls, which has an issue with pedestrian traffic. It’s all kind of clustered in one corner. I think if the carts can move people to other areas of the city, it’s going to help move tourists and visitors and move customers around to different areas and different businesses. Hopefully, we’ll see a lot more of them.” Wine on Third’s Weber agreed that there is plenty of room downtown for more golf carts from other businesses. “I hope a few years down the road there’s 20 of these things all over the place,” he said.
